Grant “Twiggy” Baker is a traveling surf bum (his words not ours), owner of the rock ‘n’ roll bar Aces ‘n’ Spades and is engaged to a Playmate.

So far, sooooo jealous.

But then he also got fired by Billabong last year, after 20 years of service for the brand, so it’s not all roses.

Well, having recently added a second Mavericks Invitational title to his 2006 win, as well as winning the Arnette Punta Galea Challenge in Spain earlier this year, it looks like the skinny man just needs to show up at the next Big Wave event to be crowned World Champion.

How’s dem apples, Bong?

We caught up with young-gun Frank Solomon, who not only stunt-doubled Gerard Butler in Chasing Mavericks , a Hollywood feature film based on the life-threatening wave, but was also an alternate for the competition.

Says Frankie: “Chasing Mavericks is a pretty good depiction as to how heavy the wave is. It’s really hard to explain. You have to see it for yourself. Imagine a slab like Kalk Bay but 30ft and that’s kind of what it’s like out there.”

“I was on the competitors boat the whole day and it was amazing seeing Twig putting on a clinic out there. It was an amazing vibe. I knew Twig had won so I was looking for a South African flag, asking random people on the boat. ‘You don’t have a South African flag in your back pocket do you?'”
